Franchisee spotlight: More control over your time and future
We catch up with Sean, who joined Snack in the Box in July 2016 and now services the East Anglia area. He has a large customer base of Vending Boxes and a few Vending Machines.
We catch up with Sean, who joined Snack in the Box in July 2016 and now services the East Anglia area. He has a large customer base of Vending Boxes and a few Vending Machines.
Snack in the Box ask Sean why he looked at SITB in the first place. What makes SITB stand out? We also look into his personal objectives, and what it was like starting his business initially. We also ask him about future plans, and sales targets too.
So, what is it that made you first look at SITB and choose the Franchise initially?
I had gone as far as I could in previous employment and was comfortable but felt like I was in a dead end position. The Head Office team had changed and I was uneasy with their strategy. So I started looking elsewhere for self-employment opportunities.
I came across SITB and met with them. I loved the simplicity of the concept, but still had a lot of doubts and questions. SITB Head Office became increasingly involved and I realised I warmed to the idea. A lot was due to the honesty of those I spoke to. I got straight answers, good and bad.
What were the 3 key personal objectives when buying the franchise?
My 3 incentives were:
· A steady income stream that would reward me better than previous employment
· Costs of the business paid off within 2 ½ years
· More control over my own time and future
With the Launch Programme, did SITB deliver what was promised?
The Launch programme was comprehensive. My initial thoughts were ''do I need that much time and support for such a long period?’’
The answer was that the time flew by, and the advice and support given assisted me to getting to the happy place I am now.
Happy to say that after two months getting to know my round with long days (which I had been warned about), I'm now on target to achieve my initial goals.
Have you needed support and what has your experience been like with the network?
The support teams are excellent. That honest factor I came across during the initial contact period continues. There is no 'blame culture' like in many businesses. The support is very refreshing.
What are the best things about running your SITB business?
As someone who has a box orientated round, I see more customers than someone with a majority of machines. This brings two distinct advantages:
Firstly, everyone seems delighted to see you. The Red Vending Box makes you an instant knight in shining armour in lots of workplaces.
Secondly, I see a huge variation of businesses. From telesales offices to car mechanics, miniature golf course designers to power stations, hairdressers to bus companies, bird of prey centres to supercar garages, and more. The variety of customer is incredible, but then again, everyone loves chocolate.
Are you able to hit your sales targets and what are your plans for the business in the future?
My sales targets are being hit, in fact, I budgeted a bit on the pessimistic side.
I now plan a 10% growth in customer numbers by Christmas. This should help me achieve my business pay off plans 6-12 months earlier than I'd forecast only 3 months ago. I've also invested in additional machines for customers I felt would benefit from them. This will assist me on fuel economies and time.
Despite my plans for growth, I will be earning more this year for doing fewer hours. That is free time I look forward to using.
Longer term, I aim for steady growth in customer numbers. There are so many potential customers out there it's frightening, but in a good way.

Women in Franchising
We spoke to one of our franchisees, Wendy, who made the switch after working at her previous company for 12 years as a credit controller. When she was leaving the job she didn’t want to go to another company and have to reestablish herself again so that’s where SITB came up trumps.
We spoke to one of our franchisees, Wendy, who made the switch after working at her previous company for 12 years as a credit controller. When she was leaving the job she didn’t want to go to another company and have to reestablish herself again so that’s where SITB came up trumps.
Wendy did not want to manage staff or have to deal with the normal office politics that seem to come with most jobs. She says “I have always worked hard but the companies I have worked for seem to gain more from that than I do.”
It’s a fair point – franchising can be really great for those looking for a change. It can fit around lifestyles, and it can offer you more flexibility than a normal 9-5 office job.
"I picked SITB as it was a business I could understand, I knew the products and I could see a need for the service. I could also control my working day. I wanted to start work at 9 after dropping my son at school and to be able to finish in time to pick him up. Plus, as an avid football fan I wanted to keep my weekends free."
"I started the business last January. SITB found the customers and did everything they said they would. They helped with the 1st stock orders, set up my routes, and trained me on how to find new customers. I had a SITB franchisee trainer with me for the first 4 weeks and even after I went solo I had several people I could call for help.
“After I established myself with the boxes, I then introduced vending machines to the business. I knew nothing about machines but with the help of the SITB team I learnt fast and even now I have the back up of 3-4 people on call for help if I have a problem. When dealing with customers it also helps to have that infrastructure behind you. It helps solve any problem or answer any questions."
So how is Wendy getting on now? Wendy is well established with her franchise business and enjoying the lifestyle that suits her best. She says:
"I work the hours I want, I am turning over more than I expected and I have learnt a lot. I would say Franchising only works if you are prepared to work. But if you need someone to tell you to work then it is not for you, but personally it suits me perfectly."

Step by step guide: from enquiry to franchise owner
From the initial enquiry about your franchise business, we will advise if there is availability in the area where the candidate lives. If this is the case we will go ahead with the following steps.
From the initial enquiry about your franchise business, we will advise if there is availability in the area where the candidate lives. If this is the case we will go ahead with the following steps:
Franchise Prospectus
Email and/or post out our chocolate franchise prospectus to the candidate. This provides a wealth of information about SITB and our Franchise Model business.
Initial Communication
Have an initial telephone conversation with the candidate. This is to check their individual needs regarding running the business. We will also cover expectations on earnings.
First Appointment
Meet with the candidate in their local area to properly present our Franchise face-to-face. This meeting should last 90 minutes and is in the form of a presentation. It will provide further detail and should answer questions from the candidate.
This is an important meeting. We will ensure the criteria of our Franchise Model fits with the candidate’s needs.
This is an important meeting, as we will also ensure the criteria of our Franchise Model fits with the candidate’s needs.
Day with a Snack in the Box Franchisee
The candidate spends an entire day with an existing Franchisee. This will involve servicing their existing customer base, in a real hands-on capacity. It gives the candidate an ideal opportunity to see how the business works. Also they can ask questions from someone who is actually running a SITB Franchise.
Formal Second Appointment
With SITB at our HQ. This involves meeting the rest of SITB Team and reviewing the business and Financials. They will review our Franchise Agreement. Also we will provide candidates with access to other SITB Franchisees.
Due Diligence
Using all the information provided by Snack in the Box, the candidates must now carry their own Due Diligence on SITB and our Franchise Model. This involves reading the Franchise Agreement and taking their own professional advice. Then review the financials and again taking professional advice, driving the territory, ascertaining how much competition is in the area and speaking with our existing Franchisees.
Signing Up
SITB will meet with the candidate in their local area in order to sign the Franchise Agreement. Then they will review what is required from the candidate prior to the Training Date. This will include registering for VAT, obtaining a business bank account, set up accounts with suppliers etc.
The time frame from sign up to the training date is typically 2 to 3 weeks

How do SITB select Franchisees?
SITB Sales Director Sean speaks about how he works with individuals looking to purchase a SITB Franchise. We also look at how to ensure both parties are confident they have made the right ‘long term’ decision when a Franchise is awarded
Snack in the Box look to select the best of the best, so we make it a priority to ensure our franchisees are as dedicated as we are about our business. Sean joined Snack in the Box, as a Franchise Field Manager, back in 2002. His role for the last 7 years is Sales Director, responsible for the recruitment and selection of new Snack in the Box Franchisees. We asked Sean how he works with individuals looking to purchase a SITB Franchise. We also look at how to ensure both parties are confident they have made the right ‘long term’ decision when a Franchise is awarded by SITB.
What qualities are you looking for in a prospective Franchisee?
Ideally, someone who wants to run the business in a ‘hands-on’ capacity. Our franchise model does not lend itself to running the business as Management Franchise.
Individuals need to be self-motivated and have a ‘cheerful’ personality. Also, realistic expectations around the earnings for a SITB Franchise and most importantly, be able to work to a system. Our experience shows that our most successful Franchisees all follow the SITB system and model.
How important is it for prospective Franchisees to talk and meet with existing SITB Franchisees?
Absolutely essential! These are the individual/couples that are running the business on a day-to-day basis . They have a wealth of knowledge about the business. This includes what works well for them as well as what are the challenges are.
SITB will try to advise of Franchisees to contact those who match individual circumstances and businesses of the candidate. This could include operating the business in a rural area or running the business as a ‘sole trader’.
Would you ever ‘turn down’ someone who wants to join SITB’s Franchise Network?
Definitely, there is no point bringing someone into business where we know they would struggle or not achieve their business ambitions. For example, if a candidate contacted us looking for a ‘multi-van’ operation, our Franchise is not geared up for this type of business model.
What Due Diligence should be carried out by Prospective Franchisees when making a final decision about joining SITB?
As much as possible. I have already discussed the importance of contacting our Franchisees. But, a candidate should ensure they are happy with the terms of the Franchise Agreement. Our Agreement is for a 5-Year Term (renewable thereafter). This is a long-term commitment for both SITB and the candidate. They should also ensure they fully understand the financial projections. More importantly, what’s required from them to ensure these projections are met. Most projections provided by Franchisors need an amount of business development and marketing, to ensure the sales revenues and profits provided.
How does someone contact SITB, who is interesting in finding more about the Franchise?
Simply email or call. We will then advise if we have availability in the area where the candidate lives. If so, we will start our selection process by providing our Franchise.

Flexibility with your new Franchise Business
SITB catches up with a Franchisee who has been utilising the franchising opportunity since 2016. He has experience in our Snack boxes, Combo machines and Slimline vending machines too, through siting business premises across the Reading area.
SITB catches up with Franchisee David, who has been utilising the franchising opportunity since 2016. He has experience in our Snack boxes, Combo machines and Slimline vending machines too, through siting business premises across the Reading area.
We ask David about his own personal objectives, business in the earlier days as well as his future plans in business. So, very importantly – was he to reach those the important sales targets?
What makes franchise vending an attractive business opportunity?
“Snack in the box was a business that I looked at along with some other franchises, it was quickly obvious that the snack route was something that seemed easy to start, was a brand that was very recognised and allowed me to sell in a product with confidence with no preparation as such involved, .i.e kitchen/cooking.”
What sets SITB aside from other franchises?
“Choosing snack in the box came down to the package that was on offer. Along with the local territory that was large enough to grow into should I wish. Another factor was the service provided by the SITB Sales Director, Sean Cleveland. The relaxed approach, which didn’t put me under any, pressure and allowed me to decide for myself. The business plan and projections were important. The field day with a franchisee and the transparency of information was a telling factor too.”
How detailed was the SITB sales and selection process?
“The sales projections were actually shown in simple terms with a realistic visible net profit. The whole business was not oversold, but described as shown with realistic growth figures.”
What were your 3 key personal objectives when buying the franchise?
“My 3 objectives when buying this franchise were to gain a work life balance that I was in control of. A business that I could grow if I chose to and something that I could operate with ease and required no re-training.”
How have you found the franchisee support?
“The support to date has been very good. The franchise manager gives me a sounding board and a first point of contact in the event of any issues. There have been a few, none of which we haven’t managed to solve with minimal fuss. Having a franchise manager who has hands on knowledge of running a franchise is the perfect dynamic to give me a quick and accurate resolution. Engineering support is also very good and machine issues have been dealt with quickly. There are things that I think could help all franchisees and take some of the pressure off this department.”
What are the best things about running an SITB business?
“The 3 best things so far are not having to answer to anybody!. Managing my own day/week. And the total flexibility to run a business my way, albeit under the umbrella of a tried and tested business.”
Are you hitting your sales targets?
“So far the Sales based on my territory have in my mind been very consistent. It has taken some time to establish my week in terms of which accounts to visit and how often. In the beginning I was trying to see everybody every week, this was not unrealistic but unnecessary. As my thought process has evolved and as I have got to know my customers and gain their trust I now find it much easier to know my business. The short term plan now is to grow key areas within my territory as I have more time on my hands through working smarter not harder.”
What are your goals for your business?
“There are many options going forward. The easiest one is to utilise the sales expertise within the franchise to add accounts to my business. This will replace and refresh my customer base allowing some poorer performing accounts to be removed, which should benefit turnover. There are other possibilities which I haven’t scratched the surface of like expanding the area. Allowing somebody else to come on board who may be self-employed? To operate a part of my area, but these are things that I’m unsure of logistically but will discuss going forward.”

A week in the life of a Snack in the Box Franchisee
Phil and Ruth have been running their Snack in the Box franchise together for 16 years. Phil says that he enjoys the freedom of being self employed and being out and about as opposed to being in an office full time. Ruth used to be a nurse but decided to join Phil with running their business together.
Phil and Ruth have been running their Snack in the Box franchise together for 16 years. Phil says that he enjoys the freedom of being self employed and being out and about as opposed to being in an office full time. Ruth used to be a nurse but decided to join Phil with running their business together.
Why choose a Snack in the Box franchise?
Phil looked at a wide range of franchises, but found out about SITB from a Franchise magazine. He says that the idea of being his own boss appealed to him. Phil explains that they were also able to work as a couple - they always knew they didn't want to employ staff in any franchise they took on, so the Snack in the Box franchise suited them well.
Ruth says that she never questioned how easy it is to sell a chocolate bar, and thought it was a great idea. Everyone loves chocolate! Ruth added that having repeat business each week from regular customers was also very important for them as it was regular income. She also felt that the association of Snack in the Box with the major confectionery brands meant that Snack in the Box must be a franchise company with a good reputation.
What does a typical franchisee week look like?
Phil and Ruth have around 150 customers, so at each of their sites they install a new snack box to replace the used one, ensure their customers are happy and content, collect the cash and then proceed to the next site. The servicing continues across 4 days, and then Friday is used to catch up on paperwork, assess potential new leads and take deliveries too.
They utilise their time effectively by splitting up and working on different parts of the wheel at the same time. This could mean Ruth will be at home with the family, whilst Phil services the machines, or vice versa. Phil explains that on Mondays he tends to get up early and service their customers who are furthest afield. He says he likes to get up early and beat the traffic and has tweaked the routes to be able to service as many customers as possible in a day.
Each evening they will count the takings from the day, log it for their customer records and pack boxes for the following day. This takes them about an hour and a half.
Ruth says:
"Our Snack in the Box business works well for us. We can run our franchise business as a couple and it works well with family life as we have 2 young boys. We are able to see a lot more of our family than if we were both working salaried jobs."
What customers can you expect?
Phil and Ruth's customers cover a variety of business properties and types. This includes offices, workshops, nurseries and care homes.
“When we want to build up our territory with some new customers, we now know what types of workplaces and what customer types will work for us and which won't. We also use the support from Snack in the Box, such as the sales training days, and we use the sales flyers produced by Snack in the Box which have worked really well and look very professional.”

Technical questions about your new Chocolate Franchise
Snack in the Box caught up with the technical support team to look at a few of the technical queries that crop up for franchisees. We have a large support team made up of field engineers and franchise managers, each with their own unique role in the company. This enables our franchisees to make the most of their new chocolate franchise opportunity.
Snack in the Box caught up with the technical support team to look at a few of the technical queries that crop up for franchisees. We have a large support team made up of field engineers and franchise managers, each with their own unique role in the company. This enables our franchisees to make the most of their new chocolate franchise opportunity.
The SITB engineering team offers a range of support to the entire franchise network. They have technical phone support for fixing faults when franchisees are on site. Field engineers are available to attend sites, from fault fixing, to relocations or even machine servicing/refilling.
What training will new franchisees receive?
All franchisees entering the business are given an ‘in house’ training day at one of our regional offices. A range of machines are stripped down and rebuilt providing a hands on technical experience. These foundations should give confidence and illustration that even the less technically minded can carry out the required routine servicing and first time fixes they are likely to encounter. We are also able to provide refresher training either out in the field or again at one of our offices to build on the knowledge already gained or to address specific requirements. Our engineers when carrying out repairs in a given area can always be joined by the local franchisee to gain more experience. Also when first handing the business over a SITB representative will be present to offer additional support and training on each of the machines visited.
What do franchisees receive as a start up package?
Incoming franchisees are provided with a part pack tailored to the package they are buying. This will include motors, panels, and machine components, as well as a tool kit, product decals and labels to enable the franchisee to start off on a steady footing.
What happens if a vending machine stops working?
Machine breakdowns are something that all franchisees will experience through their time servicing our chocolate and confectionery vending machines. All electrical appliances with moving parts will have malfunctions occur. At some point in their lifespan! One question SITB is asked a lot is “how often will my machine break down?” There are ways we can advise franchisee’s to minimise the risk of breakdowns. We also want to provide as much support as possible to minimise the impact of breakdowns. Franchisees may have the odd breakdown or issue to resolve through the course of the week. Whatever happens, SITB will be on hand to assist in resolving these issues.
Who is responsible to fix the vending machines?
The person to attend the site once the fault is reported would be the franchisee, who is in the area, and also attends the machines frequently. With any luck this should be a quick a painless fix sorted in one visit, but if there are any complex faults there will be someone to report to at our support centre.
What about moving the machines?
SITB allow franchisees to decide where to put their vending equipment and machines. In fact, we encourage franchisees to look for more opportunities to develop business and optimise sales. This could mean utilising machinery within their provided area, which may be lower in sales than others. We are here to offer guidance too, so we can always help offer insights.
What engineering support does SITB offer?
The SITB engineering team offers a range of support to the entire franchise network. We have technical phone support, providing diagnosis and guidance to fix faults when the franchisee is on site and attending a machine. We have field engineers who are available to attend sites where requested. They can carry out whatever work that specific franchisee wishes, from fault fixing, to relocations or even machine servicing/refilling. The technical department also seeks to provide parts at the best possible value to the franchise network and in the majority of cases offering next day delivery when parts are ordered.
Are the chocolate vending machines covered by a warranty?
In the first year of business all franchisee’s vending machine parts are covered by a 12 month warranty. This ensures during this period the franchisee is able to focus on the servicing of equipment, settle into a stable routine and learn the industry without the concern of parts ordering and maintenance issues. By the end of year one the aim is to have a stable business with fully functioning machinery ready for the business to grow in the coming years.
What if a machine can’t be fixed by SITB or the franchisee?
The training and support offered by SITB means that we are confident that on the whole there is no fault we cannot rectify on site. So that will be by the franchisee or engineering team. In the rare instance where we deem it best to remove a machine from site in order to carry out repairs, working with the franchisee we offer a range of options to minimise the impact on the specific site and the franchisee. This could be in the provision of a temporary replacement or a more permanent machine replacement.

How our Honesty Box system helps franchisees
Snack-in-the-Box began delivering top branded snacks to the workplace almost 20 years ago and while the business has grown into a 80 strong franchised outfit, the principles remain that made our snack vending business profitable back in 1997, and continue on today!
Snack-in-the-Box began delivering top branded snacks to the workplace almost 20 years ago and while the business has grown into a 80 strong franchised outfit, the principles remain that made our snack vending business profitable back in 1997, and continue on today!
The way it works is simple. With an 'honesty' box there is no personal contact with a vendor at the time of purchase. Customers are trusted to leave the correct change in exchange of the delicious snacks!
Snack-in-the-box franchisees deliver boxes packed full of the UK’s favourite branded snacks. An array of options cater to small to medium sized businesses, but our snack boxes are perfect for less than 20 employees. Franchisees will return a week later with a fresh packed box and take away the cash takings. There are no contracts or cost to the work-place or business, the staff only pay for the snacks they eat! It’s a straight forward method that works great.
The professionals at Snack-in-the-Box help franchisees source their initial customer base which is a great help. Franchisees are then able to build up rapport between customers that ensures each site remains profitable.
Snack-in-the-Box Sales Director, Sean Cleveland, explains:
Sometimes people ask whether customers actually do put the money in the box. They seem surprised that an honesty system works in this day and age. Most customers will be decent and honest enough to leave the exact amount in a fair exchange for the snacks they take away.
When in reality, newsagents and food retailers suffer far greater losses than our franchisees. We even have lots of ex-newsagents and shop owners within our network who can vouch for that too!
Sean Cleveland goes on to explain:
“This is a very simple cash business that relies on trust. The businesses we deliver to love our service because we keep their employees on site. They prefer that than seeing their employees wander off for mid-morning and afternoon snacks. Those same employees love our service because we make it convenient for them to buy the best chocolate, confectionery and crisps. And because they love the service we provide, they want it to work. In the smaller work place if someone abuses the system generally everyone knows who it is. So the collective honesty of the group often prevails. They tend to govern any 'would be' light fingered abusers as the rest of the staff don’t want to lose the service. In the smaller work place it really works. Put very simply, we are vending from a self-service Box.”
