Halloween traditions - from 1910 to 2019

Did you know…
Trick or treaters were given fruit in the early20th century before sweets overtook the celebration in the 1920s

In the 1960s Mars made their magic mini fun sized bars, becoming vastly popular.

Halloween sees kids getting excited for their treats, the fun sized bars and sweets are always a favourite. So where did the smaller varieties originate from?

The great depression is the source. The first mini chocolate bars were produced in the 1930s, in order to make a more affordable treat. They’ve stuck around ever since!

It became popular to hand out chocolate and sweets in the 1920s, but when the Great Depression hit people needed to start addressing spending. Chocolate and sweets were luxuries than most people couldn’t afford with their expensive sugar content.

It first became popular to hand out candy in the 1920s. But the Great Depression hit in the '30s, making it harder not just for people to afford sweets, but for companies to make them as well.

When trick-or-treating first started in the 1910s, it was common to pass out pieces of fruit like grapes and oranges. Mars, Inc. debuted its own 'junior' versions of Snickers and Milky Way in the '190s, but eventually named the minis 'fun size.' The 'fun size' options were particularly popular at the time given the new fixation on nutrition and weight loss. More and more companies followed, and now just about every company has some smaller individually packaged option, which are especially popular around Halloween.
